Why Does It Cost So Much

to Replace a Windshield?

In recent years, there have been some truly amazing advancements made in automotive technology, from enhanced safety features to improved driving experiences. However, these innovations have also brought about new challenges for repair shops, as well as consumers. Windshield replacements, for example, used to be a routine and affordable procedure; on a modern vehicle, the cost often exceeds $1,000.

Understanding the Rising Cost of Windshield Replacements

Windshield replacement costs can vary drastically depending on the age of the vehicle and the type of technology it’s equipped with. Older cars with fewer technological add-ons typically cost $300 to $600 to replace the windshield. In contrast, newer cars equipped with advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and head-up displays usually exceed $1,000 due to the need for ADAS recalibration and specialized glass.

The widespread adoption of ADAS systems and head-up displays is largely to blame for the surging costs. Safety features such as adaptive headlights, forward collision warning, and lane keep assist need original equipment manufacturer (OEM) or high-quality replacement windshields to function properly; using the wrong windshield compromises the safety and functionality of these features.

For example, installing the wrong windshield in a car equipped with head-up display technology can cause the projected data to look distorted or doubled, which could potentially lead to an accident. The unique properties of the correct windshield prevent these issues and ensure the information the driver receives is projected clearly. Vehicles with ADAS features require ADAS calibration as well as possibly a thrust wheel alignment to maintain proper functioning and safety.

The Two Types of ADAS Recalibration

When it comes to windshield replacement on modern vehicles, ADAS recalibration is key. There are two types of ADAS recalibration: static and dynamic. Static target systems are commonly found in German and Asian makes, while domestic manufacturers typically use a dynamic system. Some automakers use both.

Recalibrating static systems can be complicated because it requires a facility that has a large amount of level, unobstructed space to position the targets. It’s also a lengthy process—recalibration can take up to 3 hours. Recalibrating dynamic ADAS systems is less complicated, as it only requires a special tool connected to the vehicle’s OBD2 port to start the process. The car is then driven on the road at specific speeds to help the system relearn features like obstacles and road markings. Dynamic ADAS recalibration typically takes 30 minutes to an hour to complete.

Will Insurance Cover Your Windshield Damage?

With the costs associated with windshield replacement and ADAS recalibration, one of the most common questions we hear is whether insurance will cover the damage. The answer is that it really depends on your insurance coverage.

Comprehensive coverage often covers any type of windshield damage that wasn’t the result of an accident, including situations like hitting a deer or a rock hitting your windshield on the highway. Collision insurance should cover any damage that occurs during an accident. Understanding your insurance coverage can help you make the most informed decisions when you need windshield repairs.
