The Dangers of an Improperly Installed Replacement Windshield

The Dangers of an Improperly Installed Replacement Windshield

Your windshield does much more than just protect you from wind, rain, and debris—it is a critical safety component of your vehicle. When a windshield is improperly installed, your safety and the integrity of your vehicle are at risk. At Lucky Dog Auto Glass, we specialize in high-quality windshield replacement to ensure you and your passengers stay safe on the road.

What Happens When a Windshield is Installed Incorrectly?

An improperly installed windshield may not be noticeable at first, but over time, it can lead to severe safety hazards. Here’s what can go wrong:

🔹 Compromised Structural Integrity – Your windshield provides up to 45% of your car’s structural strength in a front-end collision and up to 60% in a rollover accident. A weak or loose windshield can pop out upon impact, significantly increasing the risk of injury.

🔹 Water Leaks and Wind Noise – A poorly sealed windshield can allow water to leak into your vehicle, leading to mold growth, electrical issues, and an overall unpleasant driving experience. Additionally, excessive wind noise can indicate a poor seal.

🔹 Airbag Malfunction – The windshield acts as a backstop for airbags, ensuring they deploy correctly in a crash. If the windshield is loose or not installed properly, the airbag could push the glass out, reducing its effectiveness in protecting passengers.

🔹 Glass Shattering at the Wrong Time – A weak windshield is more likely to shatter unexpectedly when exposed to sudden impact, temperature changes, or minor collisions.

Signs Your Windshield Was Installed Improperly

If you recently had your windshield replaced, here are some warning signs that it may have been improperly installed:

✔ Gaps or uneven molding around the edges

✔ Rattling or movement when driving over bumps

✔ Unusual wind noise at high speeds

✔ Visible bubbles or warping in the glass

✔ Water leaks inside the vehicle during rain

If you notice any of these issues, don’t ignore them! A faulty windshield puts you at risk and should be addressed immediately.

Will Waiting to Repair Your Cracked Windshield Cost You More Money?

Will Waiting to Repair Your Cracked Windshield Cost You More Money?

As a driver in Kent, Washington, it’s not uncommon to encounter a chipped or cracked windshield. Whether it’s caused by flying debris, extreme weather, or daily wear and tear, windshield damage might seem minor at first glance. However, delaying repairs can lead to escalating costs and safety risks. At Lucky Dog Auto Glass, we specialize in auto glass repair and know the importance of addressing even small issues promptly.

Here are the reasons why waiting to repair your cracked windshield can cost you more money—and potentially compromise your safety.

1. Small Cracks Can Quickly Spread

One of the biggest misconceptions is that small cracks or chips won’t worsen. However, a variety of everyday factors can cause minor damage to spread:

  • Temperature Fluctuations: In colder months, water can seep into a crack, freeze, and expand, causing it to grow. Similarly, hot weather can lead to thermal stress, widening the damage.
  • Driving Vibrations: Routine driving, especially on rough roads, causes vibrations that can worsen cracks.
  • Debris Impact: Even a tiny pebble hitting your windshield can escalate the damage.

What starts as a small repairable chip can quickly evolve into a full-blown crack that requires a complete windshield replacement.

2. Increased Repair Costs

Addressing a minor crack or chip early is far more cost-effective than replacing the entire windshield. Repairing a small chip takes less time, effort, and materials, which keeps costs low. However, once the damage expands:

  • Repairs may no longer be an option, leaving replacement as the only solution.
  • Labor and material costs for windshield replacement are significantly higher than repairs.

At Lucky Dog Auto Glass, we aim to save you money by providing affordable and efficient windshield repair services before the damage worsens.

3. Compromised Safety

Your windshield isn’t just a piece of glass—it’s an essential part of your vehicle’s structural integrity. A cracked windshield:

  • Weakens Structural Support: In the event of a collision, your windshield helps support the roof and prevent it from collapsing.
  • Affects Airbag Deployment: A damaged windshield may not properly support airbags during a crash, reducing their effectiveness.
  • Impairs Visibility: Cracks and chips can obstruct your view, increasing the risk of accidents.

Prioritizing auto glass repair ensures your safety and the safety of your passengers.

4. Legal and Insurance Implications

Driving with a cracked windshield can result in legal consequences. In Washington, damaged windshields that obstruct the driver’s view can lead to fines. Additionally, some insurance policies may not cover windshield replacement if the damage is left unaddressed for too long.

  • Insurance Coverage: Many insurance companies cover repair costs for small chips and cracks. Waiting too long may result in a denied claim for replacement.
  • Legal Compliance: Keeping your windshield in good condition helps you avoid fines and ensures compliance with local traffic laws.

5. Reduced Resale Value

If you plan to sell or trade in your vehicle, a damaged windshield can significantly lower its value. Potential buyers view cracked glass as a sign of poor maintenance, and dealerships often deduct repair or replacement costs from trade-in offers.

By addressing windshield damage early, you maintain your car’s value and avoid costly deductions.

6. Avoiding Additional Repairs

A cracked windshield can lead to more extensive damage to other parts of your vehicle. For instance:

  • Water Leaks: Cracks allow water to seep into your car, potentially damaging the interior and electronics.
  • Rust Formation: Moisture entering through a crack can cause rust around the windshield frame, leading to expensive bodywork.

Preventing further damage is as simple as scheduling prompt windshield repair.

Driving With a Cracked Windshield Can Be Dangerous

Driving With a Cracked Windshield Can Be Dangerous

At Lucky Dog Auto Glass, we understand the temptation to put off repairing a cracked windshield. Life gets busy, and a small crack may not seem like a big deal at first. However, driving with a cracked windshield can be much more dangerous than many people realize. For auto owners in and around Kent, WA, ensuring your windshield is in top condition is not just about aesthetics—it’s about your safety.

Why Is a Cracked Windshield Dangerous?

Your car’s windshield is more than just a pane of glass; it’s an essential safety feature. A compromised windshield can create several risks:

1. Reduced Visibility

Even a small crack can obstruct your view, especially when sunlight, headlights, or rain reflect off the damaged area. Over time, cracks can expand, making it even harder to see clearly and increasing the likelihood of an accident.

2. Weakened Structural Integrity

Your windshield plays a crucial role in maintaining your vehicle’s structural integrity, particularly in the event of a rollover accident. A cracked windshield is weaker and may shatter more easily, putting you and your passengers at greater risk of injury.

3. Impaired Airbag Deployment

Your car’s windshield acts as a support for airbags during deployment. If the windshield is damaged, it may not hold up properly, compromising the effectiveness of the airbags in protecting you during a collision.

4. Risk of Shattering

A crack may seem minor, but sudden temperature changes, vibrations, or impacts can cause it to spread or even shatter the entire windshield unexpectedly. This can happen while you’re driving, creating a serious hazard.

Why You Shouldn’t Wait for Repairs

Ignoring a cracked windshield can lead to higher costs down the road. What starts as a simple repairable chip or crack can quickly worsen, requiring a full windshield

replacement. For auto owners in Kent, WA, timely repairs can save both time and money.

At Lucky Dog Auto Glass, we specialize in windshield replacement and repair, ensuring your car windshield is restored to its original safety standards.

Will Changes In the Weather Make My Cracked Windshield Worse?

Will Changes In The Weather Make My Cracked Windshield Worse

As someone who drives in and around Kent, Washington, you know how variable the weather can be. From scorching summer days to cold, wet winters, we experience a wide range of conditions here in the Pacific Northwest. But what many people don’t realize is how much these weather changes can affect a cracked windshield. If you’ve been putting off auto glass repair, you might wonder: will the weather make the crack worse?

At Lucky Dog Auto Glass, we’re often asked about the impact of weather on windshield damage. Here, we’ll explore why a cracked windshield is likely to get worse with weather changes—and why addressing it sooner rather than later is in your best interest.

Why Weather Changes Impact Cracked Windshields

Cracked windshields are more vulnerable to changes in weather for a couple of main reasons:

  1. Thermal Expansion and Contraction: Glass expands and contracts with temperature changes, and any existing cracks or chips in your windshield will be impacted by this. For instance, a hot day will cause the glass to expand, while cold weather causes it to contract. This repeated stress can cause even a small crack to grow, turning a simple repair into a potential full windshield replacement.
  2. Moisture Infiltration: Washington is known for its rain, and while we love our lush green environment, that moisture can wreak havoc on damaged windshields. If water seeps into the crack, it can create further stress, particularly when temperatures drop and the water freezes. Freezing water expands, putting more pressure on the glass and widening the crack.

Given these factors, a small crack may quickly spread and worsen with fluctuating weather, leading to the need for windshield replacement instead of a quick, affordable repair.

Temperature Extremes: Heat and Cold

Extreme temperatures can especially impact cracked windshields, and in the Pacific Northwest, we see plenty of both.

  • Hot Summer Days: During the summer, the temperature of a parked car’s windshield can soar above 100°F. This high heat causes the glass to expand, and if you’ve got even a small crack, the expansion can make it worse. If you then turn on the air conditioning, the rapid cooling from the inside can put further stress on the crack. This sudden temperature difference can cause a minor crack to run across the windshield, sometimes within seconds.
  • Freezing Winter Temperatures: Cold temperatures present their own risks. When the temperature drops, glass contracts, which can stress the damaged area and cause it to worsen. And if water gets into the crack and freezes, it can expand and push the crack further.

This expansion and contraction cycle continues every time there’s a significant temperature shift, which is common in our climate. This is why an untreated crack can quickly go from a minor issue to a major problem.

How Small Cracks Can Lead to Bigger Problems

If you’re thinking about holding off on a repair, it’s important to understand the potential risks. A small chip or crack might seem harmless, but over time, and with exposure to temperature changes, that damage is likely to spread.

Once a crack gets larger than a few inches, it often can’t be repaired and will require a full windshield replacement. Not only is this more costly, but it’s also less convenient. Replacing a windshield generally takes longer than a quick repair—and can potentially keep your car off the road for longer.

Why Prompt Auto Glass Repair Matters

When it comes to auto glass repair, timing is everything. Fixing a crack early is usually faster and much more affordable. Plus, repairing minor damage helps maintain the structural integrity of your windshield. The windshield is an essential part of your vehicle’s safety system; it helps protect you in an accident and keeps the roof from caving in during a rollover. By taking care of small damage early on, you’re also investing in your safety.

What to Do If You Notice a Crack

If you spot a crack in your windshield, don’t wait for the weather to make it worse. Here’s what you can do to address it right away:

  1. Avoid Rapid Temperature Changes: Try to avoid exposing your windshield to extreme temperature shifts. For example, don’t blast the air conditioning when you get into a hot car or use boiling water to melt ice on a cold morning.
  2. Get It Repaired Promptly: At Lucky Dog Auto Glass, we’re here to make your auto glass repair as smooth and easy as possible. Getting a crack or chip repaired right away can prevent you from needing a full windshield replacement later on.

Don’t Let a Small Crack Turn into a Major Expense

Weather changes can quickly turn a minor crack into a major windshield issue. Fortunately, auto glass repair is straightforward when handled promptly. By addressing a crack now, you’ll avoid the stress, added cost, and potential safety risks of letting it worsen.

At Lucky Dog Auto Glass, we know how much you rely on your vehicle and how important it is to keep it safe and roadworthy. Don’t let a cracked windshield compromise your safety or your budget. When Is It Better to Replace a Cracked Windshield?

When Is It Better To Replace A Cracked Windshield

As an auto owner in Kent, Washington, you’re likely familiar with the stress that comes from noticing a crack or chip in your windshield. It’s a common issue, but one that raises an important question: When is it better to repair your windshield versus replacing it altogether? At Lucky Dog Auto Glass, we’re here to guide you through the decision-making process, ensuring your safety and peace of mind.

Understanding the Severity of the Crack

The first factor to consider is the size and location of the crack. Small chips or cracks, typically under 6 inches, can often be repaired without issue. However, if the crack is larger, or if it’s located directly in your line of sight, replacement is generally the safest option. A damaged windshield can obstruct your view and compromise the structural integrity of your vehicle, especially in the event of an accident.

The Role of Temperature and Moisture

Washington’s fluctuating weather conditions can also influence your decision. Temperature changes can cause a small crack to spread rapidly, especially if moisture seeps into it. Freezing temperatures can worsen the situation, leading to further damage. If you notice that the crack is expanding or if it’s been exposed to rain, it’s best to opt for a windshield replacement to avoid further complications.

Repair Versus Replacement: Which is More Cost-Effective?

Cost is another important consideration. While repairing a small crack is generally more affordable, it’s important to weigh this against the potential cost of a replacement if the repair fails. If a crack is left untreated or improperly repaired, it can worsen over time, leading to a more expensive replacement. At Lucky Dog Auto Glass, we always provide transparent estimates so you can make an informed decision that fits your budget.

Safety First

Above all, your safety should be the top priority. A windshield is not just a piece of glass; it’s a critical component of your vehicle’s safety system. In the event of a collision, it helps protect you from debris and supports the structural integrity of your vehicle. If your windshield is significantly damaged, replacement is the safest route to ensure your protection on the road.

When to Choose Repair

Repair might be the right choice if:

  • The crack or chip is small and not in the driver’s direct line of sight.
  • The damage is recent and hasn’t spread.
  • The crack is not near the edges of the windshield, where it could compromise the structure.

When to Opt for Replacement

Consider replacement if:

  • The crack is larger than a dollar bill.
  • The damage obstructs your view or is in a sensitive area.
  • You’ve noticed multiple chips or cracks.
  • The crack has spread since it was first noticed.

What To Do If Someone Breaks Into Your Car

Hello, fellow car owners! I’m here to guide you through an unfortunate but all-too-common experience: a car break-in. If you find yourself in this situation, it’s essential to know the steps to take to ensure your safety, document the incident, and get your vehicle back in shape quickly. Here’s what you need to do:

1. Stay Calm and Assess the Situation

First and foremost, take a deep breath. It’s natural to feel upset or angry, but staying calm will help you handle the situation more effectively. Approach your vehicle carefully and check for any immediate dangers, such as broken glass or potential threats in the vicinity.

2. Document the Damage

Before you touch anything, take detailed photos of the damage. This includes any broken windows, damaged locks, or missing items. These photos will be crucial when filing a police report and insurance claim.

3. Contact the Police

Report the break-in to the police as soon as possible. Provide them with all the details and the photos you’ve taken. They will give you a case number, which you’ll need for your insurance claim. Remember, the police report is vital for legal and insurance purposes.

4. Secure Your Vehicle

If your car has been left vulnerable due to broken windows or damaged locks, you’ll need to secure it. Cover broken windows with plastic or cardboard to prevent further damage or theft. If the locks are compromised, consider having your car towed to a secure location or your home.

5. Check for Missing Items

Make a list of all the items that were stolen. Include personal belongings, car accessories, and any important documents. Share this list with the police and your insurance company.

6. Contact Your Insurance Company

Inform your insurance company about the break-in and provide them with the police report number and the list of stolen items. They will guide you through the claims process and inform you about your coverage for the damages.

7. Schedule Auto Glass Repair

6 Questions You Should Ask an Auto Glass Installer

6 Questions You Should Ask

an Auto Glass Installer

Your windshield does more than just shield you from the weather; it plays a crucial role in safeguarding your vehicle’s structural integrity by preventing roof collapse during rollovers or collisions, enhancing body rigidity, aiding airbag deployment, and distributing impact forces across the frame.

Considering the important role it plays, selecting a reputable windshield replacement installer is essential. Here are six key questions you should ask to make an informed decision when choosing an auto glass company to replace your windshield.

1. Are your technicians trained and certified to install windshields?

When researching auto glass companies, this is one of the first questions you should ask. Find out how long their technicians have been on the job, what kind of training they’ve received, and whether they hold certifications from an independent certification organization. Has the company invested in its technicians’ education, including certification from adhesive (or glue) manufacturers like SIKA? Do the technicians receive on-the-job training and opportunities for continuing education?

2. Do all the materials you use meet or exceed the standards set by ANSI Z 26.1 and all relevant Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards?

The ANSI Z 26.1 standard is intended to reduce injuries to drivers and passengers resulting from glass surface impacts, ensuring necessary transparency in motor vehicle windows for driver visibility, and minimizing the risk of occupants being ejected through windows during collisions.

This standard is more than a set of recommendations; it establishes government-mandated guidelines for the production of glazing materials used in vehicles, such as laminated windshields and side windows. To adhere to federal guidelines, glass materials must be able to pass specific glazing tests that assess visibility as well as their ability to withstand various impacts and stress. This ensures that you, as a driver or passenger, are better protected on the road.

3. Have your technicians received training on the adhesives you use?

Adhesives are used to secure your replacement windshield in place after it’s been installed. Most adhesive manufacturers advocate for technicians to be certified with their products to ensure they’re used safely and accurately. For example, some adhesives can only be used within a specific temperature range. Outdoor temperatures can also affect the way an adhesive cures and the installation process, as well as how soon you can safely drive after installation.

Adhesive manufacturers frequently offer specialized training sessions that allow technicians to become certified; in some cases, they may even offer classes at the auto glass company to allow all technicians to participate. Adhesive certifications give you additional peace of mind that your windshield will be installed correctly.

4. What kind of warranty do you offer?

Many glass companies offer some form of guarantee or warranty for their work. A warranty provides assurance that the automotive glass replacement is executed correctly, and if issues arise, like water or air leaks, the company will take steps to resolve them.

5. How soon after my glass is replaced can I safely drive my vehicle?

Ask the company about the minimum safe drive-away time for your vehicle, which is the time needed for the adhesive used in the installation to fully cure. If the adhesive doesn’t cure properly, it can cause the windshield to dislodge during a collision.

The minimum drive-away time will depend on the type of adhesive the technician used; some adhesives cure in as little as 30 minutes, while others take several hours. Outdoor temperatures, humidity, and other conditions may also need to be factored in, however, technicians who are certified by the adhesive manufacturer will know how to determine the optimal safe drive-away time for your vehicle. Be cautious of windshield replacement companies that claim you can drive immediately after installation.

6. Do you have the equipment to properly calibrate my ADAS sensors?

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) features, such as adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, and collision alerts, are found in the majority of newer vehicles. ADAS relies on sensors and cameras located around the vehicle, including the windshield. These sensors are responsible for helping your vehicle respond to its surroundings. They’re highly sensitive, and even a slight misalignment (as small as a fraction of a degree) can cause the system to receive inaccurate information that could put your safety at risk.

Anytime there’s a change in the vehicle’s centerline (including windshield replacement or wheel alignments), the ADAS system needs to be recalibrated. Calibration essentially tells the sensors where to look and where they’re positioned in relation to the vehicle. There are two forms of calibration: static and dynamic. Some vehicles have either static or dynamic calibration; others use both. Although there are mobile units that offer ADAS static calibrations, they’re unreliable. Look for a shop that offers in-house static calibrations at their shop.

It’s essential that the shop you’re working with has the right equipment for ADAS calibration because it ensures that your sensors are precisely calibrated and comply with the manufacturer’s standards. All your ADAS safety features will work exactly as they did when the system was calibrated at the factory.

How to Avoid an Auto Accident in the Rain

How to Avoid an Auto Accident in the Rain

Driving in the rain can be challenging; visibility is lower, there’s less friction between your tires and the road, and reaction times are longer. It can be difficult to see the vehicle in front of you and traffic tends to slow down—a combination that can increase the risk of fender benders and other accidents.

At Lucky Dog Auto Glass, your safety is our top priority, which is why we’re sharing some valuable advice on how to stay accident-free in rainy conditions. By preparing your vehicle for the rain and keeping these essential safety tips in mind, you can protect yourself and your loved ones on the road.

Preparing Your Vehicle for Rainy Weather

Before the rainy season arrives, it’s essential to ensure your vehicle is ready to handle the challenges of wet road conditions. We recommend taking the following steps to prepare your car:

  1. Check Your Wiper Blades

Your windshield wiper blades play a crucial role in maintaining visibility. If your blades are worn or damaged, they can smear water across your windshield or even scratch it, which can affect your ability to see the road clearly. Check for signs of wear and damage, and replace them if necessary. If your blades look OK but aren’t performing well, it’s time for a replacement.

  • Check Your Lights

Your vehicle’s lights enhance your visibility in the rain and make you more visible to other drivers. Make sure your brake lights, headlights, and turn signals are working correctly, and replace them as needed.

  • Check Your Tires

Having adequate tire tread is essential for good traction in wet weather and reducing the risk of hydroplaning. Check the tread depth using a tread gauge or the penny test.

Place a penny with Lincoln’s head down and facing you into the groove of your tires. If you can see the top of his head, it’s time for a replacement. Likewise, if your tires are cracked, have unusual bulges, or other signs of damage, don’t hesitate to have a new set installed. It’s also important to make sure that all tires have the correct air pressure.

  • Don’t Wait on Brake Repairs

Brake issues can be hazardous in any condition but they’re particularly risky on wet roads. If your brakes have been squealing, grinding, or vibrating, get them serviced before the rainy season begins.

Drive Slowly and Increase Your Following Distance

Regardless of whether you’re caught in a heavy downpour or a light drizzle, it’s always best to drive slower than you would when the roads are dry. Wet conditions make it take longer to slow your vehicle, and there’s a higher chance of hydroplaning at faster speeds. Driving slower (think about 1/3 slower than you would if it wasn’t raining) will also give you more time to react to any potential hazards or obstacles on the road.

Turn on Your Lights for Better Visibility

While some states require you to turn your headlights on when it rains, Washington only requires it when visibility is poor. However, turning on your headlights when it’s raining will make your vehicle more visible to other drivers—even in broad daylight.

Plan Your Route

To minimize distractions while driving, plan your route ahead of time. Fiddling with maps or GPS systems on the road can take your attention away from the road and increase the risk of getting into an accident.

Double Your Following Distance

Maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you in rainy conditions by doubling the recommended following distance. This extra space will give you more time to react and reduce the risk of rear-end collisions. When you’re following another vehicle, try to stay within their tire tracks; this will give you better traction and reduce the risk of hydroplaning

Keep Your Windows Clear

Fogged-up windows can significantly reduce visibility, so make sure to use your defroster or air conditioning to prevent fog buildup. If your defroster isn’t working well, rolling down your windows will balance the temperature difference and help clear your windows faster.

Be Cautious Around Pooled Water

Be careful when driving through standing water, as it can sometimes be difficult to gauge its depth. Driving through deep puddles can damage your electrical components and can even cause your engine to stall or seize. To prevent skidding or losing control, avoid sudden, heavy braking. Anticipate when you may need to brake and do it gently and gradually.

Waiting It Out Can Be Wise

The first 15 minutes of rain can be particularly hazardous. When the rainwater mixes with oil on the road, it can make driving conditions extra slick. If it’s possible, try to wait 15-20 minutes after a heavy downpour begins to allow the oil to wash away.
